The first impression of the Vilamendhoo Island Resort, as guests arrive by seaplane at the jetty, is of a pure white sandbank, and palm trees surrounded by a beautiful tranquil lagoon. This promise of an idyllic and romantic getaway is abundantly fulfilled, with Vilamendhoo seeming to encapsulate all that is magical about the Maldives. The interior is among the most fascinating of all the islands, with many hidden corners displaying native plants and flowers, under the cool shade of towering palms.
The accommodation is ideal for a romantic holiday, particularly the exclusive Jacuzzi Water Villas, reserved for couples only, and featuring a secluded walled garden with a Jacuzzi for two under the stars, and a private sun deck with stairs into the sea. The choice of dining is superb — as well as the two main buffet restaurants, there is the Asian Wok, sitting over the lagoon, and the Hot Rock Restaurant on the beach, where your food, including exotic game, is cooked at your table on volcanic “hot rocks”. At the main restaurant, Friday night is Maldivian night, with themed menus, and there is Sunday Brunch with sparkling wine.
The Vilamendhoo is specifically geared for honeymoons, with the southern part of the island exclusively reserved for couples, and long stretches of white sandy beach ideal for a romantic stroll. The atmosphere is kept laid-back and casual, with no dress code, and bare feet allowed everywhere. Honeymooners enjoy a flower-decorated room and a fruit plate on their arrival night.
