While some Sandals resorts set out to be quintessentially Caribbean, the Sandals Whitehouse European Villages & Spa resort, as its name suggests, is unashamedly European. Strolling round its expansive and majestic piazza, lined with bistros, cafés and boutiques, you are quite clear that this is where Europe comes to Jamaica. But this is a highly impressive resort, covering 50 acres and surrounded by a 500-acre nature reserve of stunning beauty. The superb hotel lobby with its pillars and vaulted ceilings, hidden lighting and cascading greenery sets the tone for the upscale standards throughout the property.
True to the European theme, the 360 rooms, all ocean-front with beach views, are grouped into three landscaped courtyards or villages, and you can choose your architectural style, from Dutch charm, Italian elegance or French sophistication. There are seven restaurants offering a round-the-world culinary experience, including an outdoor buffet at the Bayside every Monday night — but as well as the restaurants, the Jerk Pit food stand on the beach comes highly recommended. The champagne breakfasts, and the weekly chocolate buffet, also help to perpetuate the decadent European theme.
