Set in a unique 200-acre ecological reserve, the Occidental Grand Xcaret is described as more of a jungle resort than a beach resort — it does have a small private beach, but this is some distance from the main building. It is a large family-friendly resort with 160 rooms in 15 buildings, all rooms having contemporary decor and a balcony or terrace, but for more seclusion and peace, guests can upgrade to the exclusive Royal Club, a resort within resort, located in three separate private buildings. The Royal Club provides personalised service and access to VIP amenities, including the Royal Club restaurant, exclusively for Royal Club guests — it should be noted, however, that the Royal Club accommodation contains a lot of steps, and is not recommended for guests with mobility problems.
Apart from the Royal Club restaurant, there are 10 other restaurants providing a wide choice of international dining, including La Hacienda for gourmet Mexican fare, Los Olivos serving Mediterranean dishes, and El Pescador, a sea-food restaurant. There are also 10 bars scattered throughout the resort, and there is plenty of evening entertainment, including cultural shows with Mayan dances in the open air theatre. With its exotic setting the resort is a popular place for weddings, which can take place against a backdrop of original rainforest or Mayan ruins.
